A Historical Commentary on Thucydides: A Companion to Rex Warner's Penguin Translation
Published in Paperback by University of Michigan Press (June, 1997)
Authors: David Cartwright and Rex Warner
Average review score:

to get your arms around Thucydides this is helpful
This is one of those books that glosses a well-known translation of a great work and gives all manner of reference notes based on, in the case of Thucydides' work, book and paragraph numbers. Often these types of books could be made a thousand times more helpful if they had just included a well drawn list or glossary of, say, in the case of Thucydides, states and islands and provinces and etc. that are on the side of the Athenians, and then one for the allies of the Spartans. Also, in basic, clear terms, give a sense of where these places actually are by associating them with modern countries and cities (in this book this is done for some locations, but it's not done consistently, for whatever reason). Also, a list of major historical figures with basic, clear, short bio's, and then a list of minor figures, etc. Basically things that would be easy to draw up that would give immediate, basic perspective just in the who, what, and where categories. As to the 'when' category, this, in Thucydides, is also always a hazy thing, and there must be a useful way to simply put historical time in perspective for these events without having to calculate backwards (B.C. or B.C.E. time) and wonder if 'winter campaigns' refers to prior or after the turn of the year and etc. (This ideally should all be done by the reader with a pen and notebook as you read the work, but, if you're going to write a 'commentary' to begin with... I mean, plays have lists of Dramatis Personae at the beginning for the reader to get their bearings a little...) In this work - A Historical Commentary on Thucydides (A Companion to Rex Warner's Penguin Translation) by David Cartwright - other than the stark paragraph by paragraph, book by book historical references and definitions there are, sprinkled in, short paragraph summaries of various events, and in the middle of the book there are five maps, very simply drawn and easy to read. It has a good, full index, a short glossary on common Greek words and terms defined throughout the book, and short introductory essays on the life, intellectual background, and aims and method of Thucydides. The main content of this book, though, is indespensable. It's obviously geared toward the general reader, and any secondary source that helps a person get their arms around Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War is worth acquiring if you can find it. There don't seem to be many available, other than the more academic oriented commentaries and etc. If you see Thucydides' work as a sort of historical bible, a basic influence for being presented with and understanding universal and foundational historical patterns and events, the nature of power, the nature of human nature, etc., and you really want to get the work down in perspective and memory then this book is something you'll want...

How to Have a Fabulous, Romantic Honeymoon on a Budget

How to Have a Fabulous, Romantic Honeymoon on a Budget
This book is by far one of the best common sense travel books I have ever read. My husband and I chose to splurge on one of the more expensive honeymoons staying on a resort in the Poconos. This book helped us to afford this extravagance and offered many additional suggestions about other places to visit along the way. Tips on booking affordable flights, eating inexpensively, and securing nice but affordable lodging was included. This book goes state by state, so you will find a perfect, romantic honeymoon even in your home state. We have re-used this book to plan other vacations, and I loan it out to many of my friends and family members when they are choosing family vacations. This book is a must have.

How to Have Your Hit Song Published
Published in Paperback by Hal Leonard (June, 1989)
Author: Warner Jay

Warner's Powerhouse Publishing Book Just Keeps on Selling
In a handsome edition signifying new publisher Hal Leonard, this fine little book has literally snowballed through the music publishing community, gathering speed and legitimacy over two decades. Author Jay Warner has been an enduring and successful presence in the music community. I remember being introduced to the first edition of his book in the seventies, and subsequently (mid-eighties) spoke with him on the phone. Though conditions and trends in music publishing have changed since first publication of this book, it remains an excellent resource and features both a detailed anatomical description of a big publishing company and an extremely useful checklist of procedures which are used by bigger publishers but are easily put into practice by anyone who is serious about making a business out of showing songs around. Jay Warner's writing style is fast and fun, and his distribution deal for this book with the gigantic Hal Leonard organization has given Warner the broad exposure and up-to-date book design he has long deserved. In my first review of the 1978 edition of this book in 1984, I expressed the hope that the book could be updated and have a long shelf life. All these years later the book has received those periodic updates, is still on bookstore shelves, and keeps selling better than ever. Ron Simpson, School of Music, Brigham Young University. Hybrid Html Design: A Multi-Browser Html Reference

You can what you like of the enclosed review, Ruth Mountaing
[NDN Logo] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hybrid HTML Design by Jean Warner and Kevin Ready New Riders Publishing, 1996, 412 pages, paperback, $35.00 by Ruth Mountaingrove You've just put your web page on Netscape and it looks beautiful. But have you checked it out on America on Line or Compuserve? Yeech! What has happened to your beautiful design? Where have the buttons gone? Why is everything on the left side or in a straight line with no breaks? Why has the picture you put in changed to that size? Where are the frames? The answers to these questions and the solutions, as much as is possible, are in the book Hybrid HTML Design. Here you will learn what tags to use to accommodate not only Netscape which is probably the most complex and developed browser but you will also be able to make it possible for aol'ers and other more primitive browsers to enjoy your work. HTML is the abbreviation for HyperTextMarkup Language. A feature I like very much is the step by step explanations with photographs of browsers showing you what each browser will do to your web page. The HTML document behind each page is printed out. Tags are explained. Browsers that don't recognize HTML tags are illustrated with photographs showing what that looks like. Not pretty. The browsers dealt with are Netscape Navigator 2 and 3, Internet Explorer 2, Oracle Power Browser 1, Hot Java Alpha 1, NCSA Mosaic 2, Compuserve Spry Mosaic, America On-line 2.4, Prodigy, Cyberdog, PointCast, the Lynx browser and others. While you may be tempted, as I was, to buy PageMill 1, I realized as soon as I got it that I still needed to learn some HTML because PageMill is limited, They admit this in their user guide which accompanies the disk. The book also deals with server issues assuming of course you want to be your own server. This implies that you are doing a lot of web work and need your own space on the net. Accompanying the book is a Hybrid HTML Design CD-ROM with Gif Builder, Debabelizer lite, Plug-ins including Shockwave for Freehand, and Director, Crescendo, Future Splash, Photo Bubbles. There is also Microsoft Internet Explorer. Also included are demos of the Oracle Power Browser, Micromedia Director 5, and Shockwave. Shareware of BBedit, BBedit lite, World Wide Web Weaver, Adobe PageMill 1 and HTML Assistant Pro 2. Demos, meaning you can play but not save. In addition there are Adobe PhotoShop 3.05, Illustrator 6, Fetch 1.2, Premier 4.0.1, PageMaker 6 and much more, like conversion programs, and lots more information on Hybrid HTML Design. The book and CD-Rom are an excellent combination. The demos make it possible to have hands-on experience before buying expensive software. Janine Warner and Kevin Reading have created a well thought out tool for the webster. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ruth Mountaingrove is an avid computer user, teacher of Senior Citzens, writer for Senior News and creator of her own web site: Web Page of a 74 Year Old Woman ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Digital News Update * Redwood Country Update * Battling Scientology: Interview with Grady Ward * Back Issues

Icons of American Protestantism: The Art of Warner Sallman
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (April, 1996)
Author: David Morgan
Average review score:

All you wanted to know about Sallman, but were afraid to ask
Most children of Protestant families, like myself, are probably familiar with Warner Sallman's "Head of Christ" and have seen it many times. However, Morgan and his fellow authors give us a reason to actually look at Sallman's work. They debunk the myth that Protestant privelage of the word has brought forth no visual culture and that popular visual piety has no place in scholarship. The writings in this book give the reader a clearer picture of Protestant immigrant visual piety and a man named Warner Sallman, who created a Jesus Christ Superstar for a conservative Christian movie era audience.
